At the Police Headquarters in the Command Post, Superintendent Williams was thinking again. Everything was moving in the right direction. The stars of the show, the TV cameras and the SWAT team as well as the bit players were all on their way. Marvellous.
âWe are almost there,â he said aloud to everyone present. âBut in the meantime, let us not spook the criminals. Let us not alert them in any way so they will not run away before we get there. I donât want any unnecessary or sudden activity or any movement or noise anywhere near that house.â
The Port Melbourne Police Station was alerted of the Superintendentâs message and the officer in charge ordered all its cars in the area to stop. Stop wherever you are and wait until further notice.
âStop and wait?â responded a young constable driving a police car in the streets of Beacon Cove. âYes, sir. Stopping now and awaiting further orders.â
The police car with the two constables inside happened to be driving into the other end of the street where Frank parked when the message to stop came through on the radio. The driver let the car roll forward and looking around noticed one car with the driverâs side window down parked on the opposite side of the road. Out of natural curiosity the young officer stopped the car right opposite Frank Ato and kept looking at him. It was a divided road here with some vegetation and palm trees in the middle of the nature strip.
âBummer, bummer,â Frank was yelling in frustration into the windscreen and up at the sky in total shock and confusion. In the street directory there was no Highett Avenue in Beacon Cove. What is happening? What do I do now?
Then he received another shock when he glanced across the road and saw the cop car and the two officers in it looking at him.
When they first noticed Frank, in heavy disguise, the two constables burst out laughing.
âA freak-showâ one said. âHe mustâve saved a lot of money on razor blades. And on haircuts. What a weirdo. Or maybe he is a hippy. There were hippies in the world a long time ago. They used to look like that. I know I saw it on TV.â
I havenât done anything wrong, thought Frank. Then he realised his appearance would look strange to the cops. They were staring at him so he felt he should respond somehow. I look strange so letâs talk strange. Let them think Iâm a foreigner.
âVerr izz Highett Avv-new?â he said loudly in the strangest accent he could do, looking at the officers.
The two constables controlled themselves, suppressed their laughter and one of them, having local knowledge, replied.
âHyatt Avenue is up the road, turn right at the second roundabout, drive on and you will see it. It is spelt H-Y-A-T-T, not Highett like the suburb. It is Hyatt Avenue. That is why you canât find it in the street directory. It is spelt H-Y-A-T-T.â
It is good public relations to assist lost visitors.
